The Flip Side: New Perspective

We saw it in the movie Freaky Friday.

We see it in A Bug’s Life.

We can see it in any story really.

New perspective. Sometimes we are so stuck on our side of thinking and reasoning that we fail to look through another’s eyes. Ofttimes people will say they considered your point of view because that is the polite thing to say. In actuality, however, they are viewing your side of the story with an agenda in mind: Validate Rightness of Original Position.

We all do it. Everyday we push our desires and perceptions on others. Every once in a while, there is more at stake than simply winning an argument. Sometimes, we lose in winning. Or the reverse, we win in losing.

My challenge is this: when something more than bragging rights is at stake, do not simply consider your story and how it makes sense. Share the opposing story as if it is yours to see if people you consult with will side with you or not. Try to be as convincing as possible.

You may not like the results. No matter! Taking on a new perspective is healthy in many ways.

Admitting you’re wrong now is a lot better than regretting crucial moves you made in haste in the future.
